Photo Edit online

1. Pixlr

For a free image editor that lives within your browser (no software download needed), Pixlr is the best free dupe of Adobe Photoshop out there.

Pixlr has many of the same functions as Photoshop, and the layout is on-point, complete with a customizable user interface with resizeable and moveable menus. Pixlr even has the same keyboard shortcuts as Photoshop.

However, while many of the tools are similar to those in Photoshop, Pixlr's still pale in comparison in terms of capabilities. For instance, be careful not to overdo and layer too many effects -- the result can look really fake really fast.

Nevertheless, Pixlr is overall a great image editor as close to Photoshop you're going to get, without paying a cent. You can upload images from your hard drive to edit, open images via URL or even open images from online libraries like your Facebook account.

2. Sumopaint

Sumopaint is available online and can be downloaded as an app, as well. You'll find free and pro versions; the former has basic tools enough for simple image editing.

Sumopaint is somewhat modeled like Photoshop, but the tools that come with the free version are not as capable as those of the latter. The Symmetry tool creates kaleidoscope-like patterns with ease, and the various Polygon tools make interesting star patterns. While these tools are fun, they may not contribute much to image editing.

But Sumopaint still has a load of other features, including basic image editing tools to mimic a watered-down version of Photoshop with mid- to high-performing capabilities.

3. PicMonkey

PicMonkey is a web app good for fun photo editing with Instagram-like filters. Similar to other online image editors, PicMonkey offers free and pro versions. Because a lot of basics, such as the curves and burn tools, are not completely available in the free version, PicMonkey is not the greatest editor for in-depth photo editing.

PicMonkey has some interesting blemish-fixing tools, including airbrushing, wrinkle-removers and even "mascara" and lip tints. However, as expected, be wary of overuse; the result can easily appear fake and edited.

Additionally, PicMonkey has loads of sticker overlays, like mustaches and party hats, as well as a host of borders and textures to easily add flair to your photos.

4. Splashup

Splashup (formerly Fauxto) is a simple online image editor good for beginners. You can import photos from third-party libraries like Flickr, Facebook, Picasa or even Photobucket, or upload from your desktop.

The Splashup setup is similar to a simplified layout of Photoshop, but with fewer tools. Splashup has basic utilities, but even so, tools like curves, levels, hue and vibrancy are absent.

Splashup is good for simple cropping, smudging and otherwise very basic tools for fast and easy touchups on the pixel level. One complaint is that Splashup does not have keyboard shortcuts.

Image: Splashup.

5. Picfull

Picfull prides itself in one-click photo editing. If you want to quickly throw an easy filter onto your photo, Picfull offers many simple options.

Within the online image editor, you can change the levels and other settings of each filter. With 21 filters to choose from, filters range from color- to level- to saturation-based filters. The image window is small compared to other editors, but since Picfull's only feature is filters, this should not be a huge problem.

6. Fotor

Fotor is an online image editor that shares similar functions with PicMonkey. Fotor hosts a wide selection of filters -- seven filters under the black-and-white category alone -- plus a cool tilt-shift tool. With sticker-like overlays, easily add hearts and bow ties to your pictures as you wish.

Fotor also has a Chrome extension for deeper browser integration. However, Fotor can be buggy sometimes, and the levels may not move as smoothly as expected.

7. GIMP

GIMP, GNU Image Manipulation Program, is an open-source software almost as old as Photoshop itself, still going strong 17 years after its initial release.

The current version has improved drastically upon older versions, but GIMP still has a slow bootup time and many of the tools require several seconds before application.

However, GIMP is stocked with customizable editing tools and effects for close editing. You can cartoonify your photo or render fog or lens flare. While usability is not very smooth with GIMP, the program does offer a variety of tools, making it a worthwhile free image editor.

8. Seashore

An open-source image editor for OS X, Seashore uses the same native file format as GIMP but uses a Cocoa UI for easy Mac workflow. Additionally, Seashore is a much simpler image editor with basic tools.

While some of the tools are customizable, it lacks filters and other special effects in more advanced image editors. Nevertheless, Seashore is a user-friendly free image editing software of OS X.

9. Image Tricks

Chock-full of filters, overlays and effects, Image Tricks for Mac comes in lite and pro versions. While the latter provides even more effects, the former already has a great selection to choose from. For example, convert your photo into ASCII art or a blue print with stylized filters. There are borders as well as generators and customizable overlays.

The videos can be easily dragged to the timeline to add them to a storyboard. The Transform tool palette allows you to rotate (vertical and horizontal flip) or to scale. In addition, with Video Tool Box, you can crop, merge, demux (extract audio, video or subtitle text from a file) and hard-code subtitles to your video creations. You can crop the video with few clicks, merge multiple files into a single video.

Weavly is simple and efficient video editing tool. You can drag and drop the video files, you can trim, mix, combine audio tracks for your video’s background – and everything without leaving Weavly’s website. Furthermore, you can import files from websites like vine, SoundCloud, YouTube and animations from Imgur or Tumblr. This editor is perfect for GIFs and video mash-ups.

This free online video editor allows you to follow three easy steps: add videos and photos, choose a theme and choose a soundtrack. Magisto selects the best parts of your video, adds your chosen music, themes and effects and splices them into poignant movies.

Magisto is user friendly and can be expected to provide you with almost all the tools and options that a editing software can do. The benefit of it: it’s not a software and it’s free.

5. Windows Movie Maker (a progressive response from Microsoft to Apple’s iMovie on the Mac and iPad, however you will need to download the software, free of cost)

Music editors

 Acoustica Basic Edition

Acoustica is a beautifully designed, comprehensive audio editor built for recording, editing, mixing, mastering and batch-processing.

Most of the features are available with the free edition, but the multitrack editing, offline analytics tools, certain audio effects and audio restoration funcations are behind a paywall.

The Standard version costs $39.90; the Premium is $119.90. Click here for a full list of features and their respective prices.

Audacity

Audacity is a great open-source audio recording and editing program compatible with most operating systems. The software lets you record live audio through a mixer or microphone; you can also import MP3, WAV, AIFF and OGG file formats -- then, digitize previous recordings, edit them and export.

It comes with an array of effects, from Equalization to Bass Boost, and lets you remove superfluous background noise.

There are keyboard shortcuts to optimize your workflow, too. And the best part? It comes with automatic crash recovery.

AudioTool

AudioTool is a great beat-making app, similar to GarageBand. It has a simple, visually pleasing interface, and lets you create complex audio arrangements with more than 14 effects.

AudioTools also has a helpful Wiki page that teaches you how to perform actions; for example, how to set up your MIDI controller or use the Splitter tool. When you're finished making a beat, export the audio as an MP3 file.

Check it out in the Chrome Web Store.

Tunekitten Audio Editor

Tunekitten Audio Editor is a lightweight audio app that lets you cut tracks and apply basic effects, like fade-in and fade-out. It's non-destructive, so you can undo and redo your edits repeatedly. You can also input various file formats, including AVI, MP3, OGG and WAV files. You can't, however, record audio directly through the program.

The app is powered entirely by JavaScript, so no Flash required. However, some user reviews report problems with crashing.

MP3 Cutter

MP3 Cutter is an audio cutter. In other words, it helps you edit down MP3 files into small audio snippets. Once you've edited the clip, export it as an MP3, WAV or OGG file.

MP3Gain

MP3Gain isn't a complete editing program, but it does provide an essential audio service. As with most normalizers, you can peak normalization, so you're not constantly adjusting the volume of tracks.

What makes it superior to other normalizers is that it also lets you statistically analyze how loudly your files sound to the human ear. It adjusts the MP3 file directly, so there's no quality lost through decoding and re-coding.

Audio Joiner

Audio Joiner is a great app for combining several songs onto a single track. The app lets you cross-fade tracks and adjust certain intervals. There's no limit to the number of songs you combine, and it's compatible with a number of file formats, including MP3, M4A and WAV. It runs entirely online, too, so there's no need to download anything.

Reaper

Reaper is a compact, downloadable digital audio workstation. Using it, you can record, arrange, edit, mix, layer and render audio. It's non-destructive, so you can undo and redo edits without corrupting your file.

Reaper is compatible with almost all operating systems; however, you can only use the editor while connected to the Internet. The free trial period lasts for 30 days, but after that, it's $50 or $225, depending on the plan.

WavePad

WavePad is free for non-commercial use -- something it reminds you whenever you open the program. It has a clean, modern interface and supports a wide array of file formats. It additionally has a text-to-speech module, lets you rip and burn CDs and comes with tons of editing effects and batch-processing.

WaveShop

WaveShop is an audio editor for Windows XPWindows 7 and Vista. The program's claim to fame is its "bit-perfect" audio editor, which doesn't alter audio samples unless they absolutely need to be changed. When you edit a portion of a file, only that portion will be adjusted -- the rest remins unaffected.

WaveShop supports most file formats, including AAC/MP4, MP3, FLAC and OGG/Vorbis. It allows for non-destructive editing, fade-in and -out and audio file format conversion. Additionally, you'll find an extensive support page.

Wavosaur

Wavosaur is a Windows-only application that lets you record, render and mix audio. The file is extremely small, taking up only 225 KB of storage, but still boasts some of the best features for editing. You can change the bit rates of files, convert file formats, normalize and apply other edits to audio files; plus, the editing process is non-destructive, so you can easily undo and redo any changes.

It's compatible with other downloadable software additions and plugins, too.

Fission

Fission is a freemium app exclusively for Macs. Using it, you can crop, trim, paste and join audio files. Fission doesn't decode and re-code files, so you don't lose any quality when making adjustments. It also supports file conversion, so you can rapidly export or batch-convert files to the MP3, AAC, Apple Lossless, FLAC, AIFF, and WAV formats.

Nero WaveEditor

Nero WaveEditor is an audio processing tool for basic editing and recording. It accommodates AC3,AIF, AIFF, MP3, WMA, MP4, OGG, WAV, WAVE and NWF files. It also allows for non-destructive processing.

Party Cloud

PartyCloud is a DJ mixing website that apparently features over 20 million songs to mix. It's extremely easy to jump into mixing and the site looks cool. You can immediately start playing awesome songs with great bass and quality. Perfect party music, the site includes the genres: Dance, Dubstep, Electronic, Hiphop, Techno, Trance, House, Deep, Drum'n'Bass and Progressive. You can easily "sync" two tracks to align their RPM's. Select a new track for one side at a time intuitively, speed the songs up, increase bass, mid, or filters for the songs. Has an "Automix" option to allow a continuous playlist and automatic mixing to occur for "busy djs". You can't upload your songs directly on the site however. Check it out and rock your party with on-the-fly DJ mixing right from your browser!

Until AM

Until AM allows you to upload your own music to mix. They also use SoundCloud to provide you with a huge library of free music to use. A very simple website, watch the CD's spin as they play. Very easy to use effects/filter feature that lets you easy add any combination of Echo, Delay and Reverb to either or both songs. Definitely check this online mixing website out.

Muziic

Cool Mixer that features an abundance of music, by playing the music straight from YouTube. The benefit is they play the music video at the same time above the virtual turntables. Have some added beats/loops that you can play with the song. Add songs to your playlist on-the-go while music is playing. Some break and reverb effects as well. Recommend trying this one.

TubeDisco

TubeDisco is another YouTube-based mixer, and really does a decent job. It lets you search for other youtube videos and load them into the wait list while your music plays. Easy drag and drop interface. A list of played tracks is kept for you to easilly bring them back in. Not too much in the way of adding affects or syncing of videos, but it does do Youtube dj mixing well.

Wheels of Steel

Left-click a track to load it on the left turntable. Right-click or shift + click for the right turntable. Watch the discs spin. Basic mixing and levels features. Sample music included, as well as some music mixes from YouTube and SoundCloud.

One Motion

A pretty cool virtual turntable that lets you virtually scratch the song you’re playing. You have to upload your own mp3 into this mixer, other than the one default tune that comes preloaded. Add Cutoff, Echo, Distance, Speed and Effects to your track.

Jamaicans Music

The focus of this virtual dj mixing site is Reggae and Dancehall music. They have a giant selection of "mix-tapes" that you can choose from based on popularity, each with a swathe of songs. Otherwise it’s a very basic mixer, so you probably only want to use it if you're into the Reggae/dancehall sound. However, it does make use of cues, so there are some useful unique features to it.
